Luke 7:19
And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
Luke 7:19 (KJV)
Context
The scene unfolds at a critical juncture in the ministry of John the Baptist. Having spent his public life proclaiming the coming Messiah and preparing the way for the Lord, John now finds himself imprisoned and confronting doubts. Even the one who first identified Jesus as the Lamb of God seeks confirmation of the Messiah’s identity. He therefore sends two of his devoted disciples to Jesus with the question, “Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?“
Meaning
John’s inquiry is not a denial but a sincere request for clarification. It reflects the reality that even the most faithful believers can experience uncertainty about God’s promises. By directing his disciples to the source, John demonstrates a desire for personal verification rather than reliance on rumor. The phrase “he that should come” echoes the messianic expectation of the Old Testament, pointing to the promised Deliverer. John’s question, “or look we for another?” underscores the uniqueness of Jesus as the only Savior, and it encourages believers to bring their questions directly to Christ.
Biblical connections
The two disciples obey promptly, showing loyalty and obedience to their teacher. Their willingness to approach Jesus directly underscores the importance of seeking answers from the One who holds the truth. Their action models the believer’s responsibility to pursue clarification from Christ Himself. In the following verses (Luke 7:20-23), Jesus answers not with a simple “yes” but by performing a series of miracles—healing the sick, raising the dead, and proclaiming good news to the poor. He instructs the disciples to report what they have seen and heard. These deeds fulfill Old Testament Messianic expectations, confirming Jesus as the long-awaited Savior.
Application
This passage teaches several key lessons. First, doubts can affect even the most devoted, reminding us that questioning is part of the faith journey. Second, it emphasizes the necessity of seeking answers directly from Jesus rather than relying on second-hand information. Finally, Jesus’ authoritative response demonstrates His divine power, offering hope and reassurance to all who place their trust in Him. John’s example also shows how spiritual leaders should direct others to Christ, pointing them to the Messiah rather than to themselves.
Reflection
Luke 7:19 highlights John the Baptist’s request for confirmation and the faithful response of his disciples. It underscores the importance of turning to Christ for truth and reminds believers of His supreme authority and power. The passage calls readers to examine the evidence for Jesus as the Christ and to trust Him even when circumstances are difficult, warning against the temptation to seek a different kind of Messiah or to lose hope when expectations are not met.
