Luke 9:17

And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.

Luke 9:17 (KJV)

This verse concludes the account of Jesus miraculously feeding a multitude with only five loaves and two fish (Luke 9:10-17). After the twelve disciples returned from their mission, Jesus withdrew with them to a remote place, but a large crowd followed. He welcomed them, spoke about the kingdom of God, and healed those in need. As evening approached, the disciples urged Jesus to send the crowd away to find food, but He told them, “You give them something to eat” (Luke 9:13).

With only five loaves and two fish, Jesus took the food, looked up to heaven, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to the disciples to distribute. Verse 17 records the outcome: everyone ate and was filled, and the disciples gathered twelve baskets of leftover fragments.

The phrase “were all filled” indicates that every person had enough and was satisfied; no one was overlooked. The twelve baskets of leftovers demonstrate the abundance of Christ’s provision—far more than the original five loaves and two fish. This miracle reveals Jesus’ divine power over creation and His compassion for physical needs.

The disciples’ role is significant: although they initially doubted, they obeyed Jesus’ instructions and distributed the food. Their participation deepened their faith and taught them to trust in God’s power even when resources seem insufficient. The twelve baskets also correspond to the twelve disciples, each receiving a basket, symbolizing their personal share in Christ’s work.

This miracle points to Jesus as the one who satisfies both physical and spiritual hunger. As Jesus later declared, “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35). Just as the crowd was physically satisfied, believers are spiritually satisfied when they partake in Him through faith. The parallel account in Matthew 14:20 records the same event with the same detail of twelve baskets.

This verse encourages believers to trust in God’s sufficiency and to participate in His work even when resources seem inadequate. God can take what we offer—however small—and multiply it abundantly to meet the needs of others. The leftovers remind us of God’s generous provision: not only was there enough, but there was abundance left over. This encourages generosity, trusting that God can multiply our offerings.

Luke 9:17 reminds us of God’s power, provision, and abundance. It calls us to bring our limited resources to Jesus, obey His instructions, and trust Him to provide more than enough. It also points us to Christ as the ultimate source of nourishment for our souls, satisfying our deepest hunger through faith in Him.
