Luke 9:11

Listen to this article

“And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.”

Context:Luke 9:11 is a verse within the larger passage of Luke 9:10-17. In the preceding verses, Jesus had withdrawn to a deserted place with His disciples after the twelve apostles had returned from their missionary journey. However, the crowds found out about it and followed Jesus. Recognising their needs, Jesus welcomed them, taught them about the kingdom of God, and performed healings.

Jesus’ Compassion:In this verse, we see Jesus’ compassion for the people who sought Him out. Despite desiring solitude, He received them warmly instead of sending them away. This demonstrates His love and concern for the needs of others, reflecting His role as the Good Shepherd who cares for His flock.

Preaching the Kingdom of God:One of Jesus’ central messages throughout His ministry was the proclamation of the kingdom of God. In Luke 9:11, He took the opportunity to speak to the crowd about the kingdom of God. This kingdom refers to God’s reign and rule in the hearts and lives of believers, both in the present age and in the age to come. Jesus taught about the principles, values, and blessings of God’s kingdom, inviting people to repent and embrace a relationship with God.

Healing the Needy:Alongside teaching about the kingdom of God, Jesus also healed those who were in need of healing. He not only addressed their spiritual needs but also their physical ailments and infirmities. This demonstrates His authority and power as the Son of God, who can bring restoration and wholeness to both body and soul.

  • Application:This verse encourages us to seek Jesus in all aspects of our lives. Just as the people pursued Him, we should pursue a relationship with Him, desiring to hear His teachings and experience His healing power. It also reminds us of Jesus’ compassion and His willingness to meet our needs. We can find solace and restoration in Him, knowing that He is the source of both spiritual and physical healing.
