Luke 10:12
But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.
Luke 10:12 (KJV)
Context
Jesus spoke these words while sending out the seventy disciples to proclaim the kingdom of God. In Luke 10:10-11, He instructed them that when entering a town that refused to receive them, they were to wipe the dust from their feet as a testimony against it. Luke 10:12 then delivers the solemn warning that follows that rejection.
Meaning
Jesus compares the rejecting city to Sodom, a city destroyed by fire and brimstone for its wickedness (Genesis 19). He declares that on the day of judgment, it will be more tolerable for Sodom than for that city. This does not mean Sodom will be saved; rather, it indicates degrees of punishment. Those who heard the gospel and rejected it face even severer judgment than Sodom did.
The phrase “in that day” points to the final judgment, a day of reckoning. Jesus’ opening words, “But I say unto you,” carry divine authority. Rejecting the disciples was not merely a human offense; it was rejection of Christ and the Father who sent Him (Luke 10:16).
Biblical connections
The reference to Sodom anchors the warning in God’s past judgments. Sodom’s destruction in Genesis 19 demonstrates the certainty of divine judgment. Jesus intensifies that warning: greater opportunity brings greater responsibility. Those who heard the kingdom message and refused it bear more accountability than those who never received such revelation.
Application
This verse is a sobering reminder of the urgency of the gospel. It warns against complacency and rejection of God’s message. For those who have heard the truth, the call is to respond with faith and obedience, not to presume upon grace or delay repentance.
Reflection
Luke 10:12 challenges every reader to consider how they respond to the message of Christ. It underscores the seriousness of the decision to accept or reject the gospel. The warning is clear: failing to heed God’s call may result in severe judgment, while faithful response leads to life.
