Luke 11:48

Posted on 18 May at 14:40

“Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres.”

Context:To understand the verse better, it is essential to consider the broader context of the passage. In Luke 11:37-54, Jesus is invited to dine at a Pharisee’s house and criticizes the Pharisees and lawyers for their hypocrisy. He condemns their external show of righteousness while neglecting justice, love, and faithfulness to God’s Word.

Bearing Witness and Allowing Deeds:In this verse, Jesus accuses the religious leaders of bearing witness to and allowing the actions of their ancestors. He acknowledges that they approve of the deeds of their forefathers who killed the prophets sent by God. This statement suggests that the religious leaders were complicit in perpetuating the same attitude of rejection towards God’s messengers.

Building Sepulchres:Jesus further points out that while the religious leaders honored the prophets by building their tombs or sepulchres, they were not truly following in their footsteps. By constructing these tombs, they appeared to honor the prophets, but in reality, they were distancing themselves from their teachings and actions.

Spiritual Hypocrisy:The core message of this verse is to expose the hypocrisy of the religious leaders. They claimed to revere the prophets of the past but failed to live out the essence of their message. Jesus’ criticism emphasizes the importance of aligning one’s actions with genuine faith and righteousness rather than merely paying lip service or engaging in empty rituals.

Application:This verse challenges us to examine our own lives and ensure that our faith is not superficial. It encourages us to live out the teachings of Christ genuinely and not merely go through religious motions. We are called to honor God not only with our words but also with our actions, seeking to follow His will and demonstrate His love to others.
