Luke 11:48

Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres.

Luke 11:48 (KJV)

Jesus speaks these words during a meal at a Pharisee’s house, where He pronounces a series of woes against the Pharisees and experts in the law. He condemns their outward religiosity while they neglect justice and the love of God. In the preceding verse, He charges them with building the tombs of the prophets whom their fathers killed (Luke 11:47). Verse 48 intensifies that charge.

“Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers” means that the religious leaders both testify to the historical fact that their ancestors killed the prophets and consent to those actions. Their building of sepulchres is not genuine honor; it is an outward act that reveals their spiritual kinship with the murderers. By honoring the prophets’ tombs, they distance themselves from the prophets’ message and align themselves with the rejection that caused their deaths. Jesus exposes their hypocrisy: they claim to revere the prophets of the past but fail to live out the prophets’ call to righteousness.

This verse connects to Matthew 23:31, where Jesus says that by building the prophets’ tombs they testify against themselves that they are children of those who killed the prophets. The following verses in Luke (Luke 11:49-51) show that this generation will be held accountable for the blood of all the prophets, from Abel to Zechariah, because they continue the same pattern of rejection. The religious leaders reject Jesus and His messengers just as their fathers rejected the prophets.

This verse challenges us to examine whether our faith is genuine or merely outward show. We can honor the past with words and rituals while rejecting God’s present messengers and His call to obedience. True reverence for the prophets is shown by heeding their message, not by building monuments. We are called to align our actions with God’s will, demonstrating His love and righteousness in our daily lives.

Consider whether your religious practices reflect a heart that truly follows God or merely a tradition that masks inner resistance. Ask God to reveal any area where you honor Him with your lips while your heart is far from Him, and seek to live out the faith you profess.
