Luke 12:6

Posted on 18 May at 14:40

“Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?”

Context:In the preceding verses, Jesus warns His disciples about the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and encourages them to fear God rather than men. He assures them that God values and cares for His people, even in the midst of persecution.

Sparrows:Jesus uses sparrows as an illustration because they were inexpensive birds commonly sold in the marketplaces for food or as sacrificial offerings. They were considered of little worth, yet Jesus draws attention to the fact that God does not overlook even the smallest and seemingly insignificant creatures.

Value of a Sparrow:Jesus points out that five sparrows are sold for two farthings, which was a very small amount of money. A farthing was the smallest denomination of currency at that time. Despite their low value, Jesus emphasizes that not one sparrow is forgotten before God.

God’s Care and Knowledge:By highlighting God’s concern for even the smallest creatures, Jesus reassures His disciples that God is fully aware of their circumstances, needs, and struggles. If God cares for and remembers every sparrow, how much more does He value and care for His human creation, especially His followers?

Message of Assurance:This verse serves as an assurance of God’s love, care, and attentiveness towards His people. It is a reminder that God sees and knows each individual intimately, and nothing escapes His notice. Jesus wants His disciples to trust in God’s providence and rest assured that they are valued and cherished by their Heavenly Father.

Application:This verse encourages believers to find comfort and security in the knowledge that God is intimately involved in their lives. It reminds us that no matter how small or insignificant we may feel, God cares for us deeply. We can trust Him with our concerns, knowing that He sees, remembers, and provides for us in ways we may not always understand.
