Luke 11:36
If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.

Context
In Luke 11, Jesus teaches His disciples about prayer and persistence, and He also confronts the Pharisees’ hypocrisy and their demand for a sign. Verses 33–35 use the imagery of a lamp and the eye to explain how spiritual perception works. Verse 36 then draws the conclusion: when the whole body is full of light, with no part dark, the entire person is illumined, just as a bright shining candle gives light.
Meaning
The “body” here represents the whole person—mind, heart, and actions. The “light” is the truth of the Gospel, received through the Holy Spirit’s work as the word of God is heard and obeyed. The condition “having no part dark” means that every power and faculty of the soul is affected by this light, leaving no area untouched by sin or ignorance. This is not a claim that any believer’s knowledge is perfect in this life; rather, it describes a life wholly given to the light of Christ, where darkness has no place to dwell.
Jesus’ comparison to a candle’s bright shining shows the result of such wholehearted response: a life that is completely illumined, dispelling darkness and providing guidance to others. The verse follows the warning in verse 35 to take heed that the light in you is not darkness, and it builds on the principle in verse 34 that the eye is the lamp of the body. When the eye is good, the whole body is full of light; when it is bad, the body is full of darkness.
Application
This verse calls us to examine our lives and ensure that every part is aligned with God’s truth. It reminds us of the importance of integrity and the need to walk in the light of His Word. We should strive to cultivate a consistent and unwavering commitment to righteousness, allowing God’s light to shine through us.

The promise of this verse is that when no part is dark, the whole body will be full of light. Ask the Lord to search your heart and to make you wholly His, so that your life may shine brightly for Him.
