Luke 11:37

And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat.

Luke 11:37 (KJV)

This verse records a turning point in Jesus’ ministry. As He was speaking, a certain Pharisee invited Him to dine, and Jesus accepted, going in and sitting down to eat. The setting is significant: Jesus often engaged with religious leaders, using everyday occasions to teach the truth of God’s kingdom.

The immediate context, Luke 11:37-54, shows Jesus directly addressing the Pharisees with a series of rebukes and warnings. His teaching shifts from external practices to the internal condition of the heart. The Pharisees were known for strict adherence to religious laws and traditions, emphasizing outward rituals while neglecting matters of the heart.

By accepting the invitation, Jesus entered the Pharisee’s space, creating an opportunity for dialogue and instruction. In Jewish culture, sharing a meal symbolized fellowship and acceptance. Yet Jesus used this occasion to bring a deeper message, confronting hypocrisy even at the dinner table.

In the following verses, Jesus criticizes the Pharisees for their outward focus and neglect of justice and love. He contrasts their meticulous attention to washing dishes with their neglect of justice and the love of God. This highlights the importance of true righteousness and the need for internal transformation.

The parallel in Luke 7:36, where another Pharisee invited Jesus to eat, suggests such invitations could stem from genuine interest or a desire to test Him. Jesus’ willingness to accept shows His commitment to teaching truth in every setting, even among potentially hostile company.

This passage challenges us to examine our own lives and motives. Our relationship with God is not based on outward appearances or religious rituals alone. It requires a genuine commitment to God, an inward transformation of our hearts, and a love that extends to others.

Luke 11:37 captures the account of Jesus being invited to dine with a Pharisee. This event sets the stage for His teachings on true righteousness and the importance of inner transformation rather than mere external religiosity. It reminds us to focus on cultivating a genuine relationship with God and expressing His love through our actions.
