Luke 11:35
“Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.”
Context:Luke 11:35 is part of a larger passage where Jesus teaches about the importance of light and darkness. He had just finished speaking about the lamp of the body and how no one lights a lamp and hides it, but rather puts it on a lampstand so that it gives light to everyone in the room. In verse 34, Jesus says, “The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.” It is in this context that He continues with verse 35.
Warning against spiritual darkness:Jesus is cautioning His listeners to be careful that the light within them does not turn into darkness. In the spiritual sense, darkness represents ignorance, sin, and separation from God, while light represents knowledge, righteousness, and fellowship with God. The warning implies that it is possible for someone who has experienced the light of God’s truth to allow that light to become dimmed or corrupted by various influences.
Maintaining spiritual light:The phrase “Take heed therefore” emphasizes the need for vigilance and mindfulness. It implies that it is the individual’s responsibility to guard against the darkness creeping into their lives. Believers are called to be watchful over their hearts, thoughts, and actions, so that the light of Christ within them continues to shine brightly.
The importance of genuine faith:This verse reminds us that merely professing to have the light of Christ is not enough. True faith requires an authentic and sincere relationship with Jesus. It is not merely external actions or appearances that matter but the condition of the heart. Jesus emphasizes the need for an “eye” that is “single,” or focused on Him alone. When our focus is undivided and centered on Jesus, our entire being is filled with His light.
Guarding against hypocrisy:The warning of verse 35 can also be understood as a caution against hypocrisy. Jesus frequently rebuked the religious leaders of His time for their outward show of piety while their hearts were filled with darkness. This verse serves as a reminder to examine our motives and ensure that our actions align with the genuine light of Christ within us. It calls us to live with integrity and authenticity.
Application to our lives:Luke 11:35 prompts us to reflect on the state of our own hearts. Are we nurturing the light of Christ within us, or are there influences that are dimming or distorting that light? It encourages us to examine our thoughts, desires, and behaviors, ensuring that they are aligned with God’s truth and righteousness. It reminds us to seek a genuine and single-minded relationship with Jesus, guarding against hypocrisy and superficial faith.
- Summary:Luke 11:35 serves as a warning against allowing the light within us to be overtaken by darkness.
- It calls us to be vigilant, sincere, and single-minded in our faith, and to guard against hypocrisy.
- By nurturing the light of Christ within us and aligning our lives with His truth, we can shine brightly and bear witness to His transforming power.
