Luke 11:33

Posted on 18 May at 14:40

“No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.”

Context:In Luke 11, Jesus is teaching His disciples about prayer and the importance of persistence in seeking God. He also addresses the crowd, giving them warnings and teachings. In verse 29, Jesus begins to speak about the sign of Jonah and the need for repentance. This verse on the candlelight follows His teaching on the importance of spiritual discernment.

Throughout the Bible, light is often used as a symbol for righteousness, truth, and guidance. Jesus Himself claimed to be the “Light of the World” in John 8:12. Here, He uses the imagery of a candle to convey a spiritual truth.

The act of lighting a candle represents the illumination of truth and the spreading of God’s Word. When a person lights a candle, it is intended to give light and dispel darkness. Likewise, as believers, we are called to be the light of the world, reflecting the truth and love of Christ.

Jesus emphasizes that when someone lights a candle, they do not hide it in a secret or obscure place. Instead, they place it on a candlestick, where it can shine brightly and be seen by all. This implies that our faith and the truth we possess should not be concealed or kept private. Instead, we are called to share the light of the Gospel with others and be bold in our witness.

The candlestick is a holder or stand that elevates the candle, ensuring its light is visible and widespread. In a spiritual sense, the candlestick represents the platform or opportunities that God provides for us to share His truth. It can refer to the church, community, workplace, or any context where believers have the chance to make an impact for Christ.

Jesus explains that the purpose of placing the candle on a candlestick is so that those who enter the room can see the light. Similarly, our lives should be a shining example of Christ’s love and truth. By living out our faith openly and authentically, we have the potential to influence and draw others to God.

Luke 11:33 serves as a call to action for believers. It encourages us not to hide our faith or keep the truth to ourselves. Instead, we are to boldly proclaim the Gospel, allowing our light to shine before others, and pointing them towards Christ. We should be intentional in sharing God’s love, grace, and truth, making a positive impact on the lives of those around us.
