Luke 11:3

Posted on 18 May at 14:40

“Give us day by day our daily bread.”

Context:It is important to consider the context of the verse to gain a deeper understanding. In the preceding verses (Luke 11:2), Jesus begins the Lord’s Prayer with the phrase “Our Father which art in heaven.” By addressing God as our Father, Jesus emphasizes the intimate and personal relationship that believers have with God through Him.

Daily Bread:The phrase “our daily bread” is a metaphorical expression that represents both physical and spiritual sustenance. Bread is a staple food that provides nourishment for the body. In this prayer, Jesus encourages His followers to depend on God for their daily needs, acknowledging Him as the ultimate provider. It reflects the recognition that our sustenance comes from God, who faithfully provides for His children.

Trust in God’s Provision:By praying for daily bread, Jesus teaches His disciples to have faith in God’s continuous provision. It encourages believers to rely on God’s daily sustenance rather than being anxious about the future or hoarding resources. It serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness and encourages a daily dependence on Him.

Spiritual Application:While the verse primarily refers to physical sustenance, it also has spiritual implications. In John 6:35, Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life.” This statement suggests that He is the ultimate source of spiritual nourishment. Praying for daily bread can be seen as a request for spiritual sustenance, asking God to satisfy our spiritual hunger and provide us with the necessary strength, wisdom, and grace to navigate each day.

  • Gratitude and Contentment:The prayer for daily bread teaches believers to cultivate a heart of gratitude and contentment. Recognizing that all provision comes from God encourages a humble and thankful attitude. It also reminds believers to be content with what God provides for each day, trusting in His wisdom and knowing that He knows our needs better than we do.
