Luke 17:13

And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.

Luke 17:13 (KJV)

Jesus travels along the border region between Samaria and Galilee when He encounters ten men with leprosy. Leprosy in biblical times was a severe, contagious disease that brought social and religious isolation. The law required lepers to keep their distance from others, so they stand afar off and cry out to Jesus as He passes by.

The lepers lift up their voices together, a loud and unified plea born of desperation. Their physical condition has driven them to the point where they hold nothing back. They address Jesus as “Master,” a title of authority and respect. The Greek term behind “Master” is related to “Rabbi,” acknowledging Jesus as a teacher sent from God and a worker of surprising miracles. Their request, “have mercy on us,” is a direct appeal for compassion and divine intervention, rooted in the recognition of their own hopeless condition.

Their cry demonstrates a simple but genuine faith in Jesus’ authority and power to heal, even before they receive their cleansing. They do not demand healing or make entitled requests; they simply plead for mercy. This posture of humility acknowledges their unworthiness and their complete dependence on Jesus’ compassion and grace.

Luke 17:13 reminds us to approach Jesus with the same humility and faith. Just as the lepers recognized their desperate need, we can acknowledge our own need for His mercy in every situation. Whether we face physical ailments, emotional pain, or spiritual struggles, we can cry out to Him, knowing that He is compassionate and willing to respond. Their example teaches us to come to Jesus with a clear acknowledgment of need, a confession of His authority, and a specific plea for mercy.

  • In summary: Luke 17:13 teaches us the importance of recognizing our need for Jesus’ mercy and approaching Him with humility and faith, trusting in His power to transform our lives and respond to our heartfelt cries for help.
