Context

This verse opens a larger section in Luke’s Gospel where Jesus teaches His disciples about faith, prayer, and the kingdom of God. Immediately before this, in Luke 17, Jesus spoke of coming trials and afflictions, making persistent prayer especially needful. The Greek word translated “ought” (dein) conveys a strong moral necessity or obligation. Prayer is not optional for believers; it is a binding duty.
