Luke 18:3

Posted on 18 May at 14:39
Listen to this article

“And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary.”

Context:To understand the verse better, it is essential to consider the context of the passage. In the previous verses (Luke 18:1-2), Jesus introduces the parable by saying that He spoke a parable to them to show that they should always pray and not lose heart.

The Widow:The verse mentions a widow who comes to the judge with a plea for justice against her adversary. Widows in biblical times were often vulnerable and in need of protection. They were among the marginalised groups in society. The widow’s request for vengeance indicates her desire for justice and protection against someone who wronged her.

The City and the Judge:The setting of the parable is a certain city, and it mentions a judge who does not fear God nor regard man (Luke 18:2). The judge represents an unrighteous and uncaring authority figure who does not uphold justice as he should.

The Widow’s Persistent Request:The widow persistently comes to the judge, repeatedly asking him to avenge her of her adversary. Her perseverance is highlighted in this verse, suggesting that she did not give up easily. Despite facing an unjust judge, she continues to plead for justice, hoping for a favourable response.

Application:The parable emphasises the importance of persistence in prayer. The widow’s persistence serves as an example to the disciples and believers in general, teaching them to continue praying and not lose heart even in the face of challenges or delays. The parable encourages believers to persistently bring their needs, concerns, and requests before God, trusting in His justice and His timing.

  • Overall:Luke 18:3 teaches us about the significance of persistent prayer. It encourages believers to approach God with their needs, continually seeking His justice and intervention, knowing that He hears and answers prayers according to His will and purpose.
