Luke 19:19

In Luke 19:11‑27 Jesus tells the parable of the ten pounds (or minas) to illustrate key aspects of the Kingdom of God. A nobleman goes into a far country to receive a kingdom and entrusts his ten servants with equal amounts of money, instructing them to conduct business until his return. When the nobleman comes back he summons the servants to give an account of how they handled the resources entrusted to them.

Luke 19:19 specifically records the response of one servant who reports that he has gained five pounds. The master replies, “Be thou also over five cities.” This exchange highlights the primary message of the parable: faithfulness and responsibility. Those who demonstrate diligence, wisdom, and faithful stewardship are rewarded with greater authority in the master’s kingdom.

Stewardship – The nobleman represents Jesus, and the servants represent believers who are given gifts, talents, and resources. We are called to be faithful stewards of what God has given us—our time, abilities, finances, and spiritual gifts—recognizing that how we use these resources has eternal significance.

Faithfulness in small things – The servant’s faithful handling of a modest amount prepares him for larger responsibilities. This teaches that diligence in seemingly insignificant matters prepares believers for greater tasks in God’s kingdom.

Rewards and accountability – The master’s commendation reflects the principle that faithful service will be rewarded. Believers can expect divine acknowledgment and greater responsibility as they wisely invest their God‑given resources in advancing His purposes.

Kingdom authority and responsibility – The promise to set the faithful servant over cities indicates that those who are faithful will be entrusted with increased authority in the age to come. It underscores the importance of using our earthly opportunities to prepare for our eternal role in God’s kingdom.
