Luke 19:28

Listen to this article

And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending vp to Hierusalem. Luke 19:28 (KJV)

This verse is part of the narrative leading up to Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, which took place during the final week of His earthly ministry. It marks a decisive movement toward the city that would become the focal point of His redemptive work.

Historical Context:

In Luke 19 Jesus is approaching the city of Jericho, which lies to the east of Jerusalem. Earlier in the chapter He had taught, healed a blind man, and encountered Zacchaeus, demonstrating compassion and authority. By verse 28 He had sent the multitude away and, together with His disciples, left Jericho and began the deliberate journey toward Jerusalem.

Prophetic Significance:

Luke 19:28 marks a turning point in Jesus’ ministry. The verse signifies His intentional decision to go to Jerusalem, knowing that His time was drawing near for the fulfillment of God’s plan of salvation. He understood that this journey would ultimately lead to His crucifixion and resurrection.

Foreshadowing of the Triumphal Entry:

Following this verse Jesus continues toward Jerusalem. In the subsequent verses He instructs His disciples to bring Him a young donkey, fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9. This prepares the stage for the triumphal entry, when the crowds welcome Him with cloaks and palm branches, proclaiming Him as King.

Symbolism and Spiritual Lessons:

The phrase “went up to Jerusalem” carries spiritual significance. It denotes a purposeful and deliberate ascent toward the city that held both religious and political importance. Jesus’ ascent shows His determination to fulfill His mission and the path that leads to the ultimate sacrifice on the cross.

The Importance of Jerusalem:

Jerusalem was the center of Jewish worship, the location of the temple and major festivals. Jesus’ journey emphasizes the central role the city plays in God’s redemptive plan, and His arrival marks a pivotal moment in the unfolding of salvation for humanity.

Willingness to Suffer:

Jesus knew the fate that awaited Him in Jerusalem—arrest, trial, crucifixion, and resurrection. Despite this knowledge, He willingly proceeded, demonstrating obedience to the Father’s will and love for humanity.

Lessons for Believers:

From Jesus’ example we learn obedience, self‑lessness, and perseverance. Just as He set His face toward Jerusalem, believers are called to remain steadfast in committing to God’s purposes, even when the journey is challenging.

In summary, Luke 19:28 sets the stage for the triumphal entry and underscores the significance of Jesus’ deliberate ascent toward Jerusalem. It reminds us of His willingness to suffer and His obedience to the Father’s will, offering a model of faithful perseverance for all who follow Him.
