Luke 19:31

And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.

Luke 19:31 (KJV)

As Jesus approaches Jerusalem for the final time, He sends two disciples ahead to a village with a specific task. They are to find a colt tied there, untie it, and bring it to Him. This verse gives the exact response they are to give if anyone questions their actions: “Because the Lord hath need of him.”

The instruction reveals Jesus’ sovereign authority and foreknowledge. He knows precisely where the colt is tied and what will be asked, and He prepares His disciples with the right words. The phrase “the Lord hath need of him” is not a request but a declaration of divine necessity. As Lord, Jesus has rightful claim over all creation and its resources, and His need is sufficient reason for the colt to be released.

This event fulfills the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9, which describes the Messiah coming “lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.” By riding this colt into Jerusalem, Jesus openly presents Himself as the promised King and Messiah. The disciples’ obedience also models faithful service: they do not question or hesitate but act promptly on His command.

The owners of the colt, when told of the Lord’s need, allow it to be taken. Their willingness illustrates a deeper principle: everything we possess ultimately belongs to the Lord. When He calls us to release our time, resources, or plans for His purposes, we are to respond with the same readiness. Recognizing Jesus as Lord means acknowledging His authority over all we have and being willing to offer it back to Him.

This verse also speaks to our own response to Christ’s call. Just as the disciples and the colt’s owners cooperated with Jesus’ plan, we are invited to trust His leading even when we do not fully understand it. The Lord still has need of willing hearts and surrendered possessions, and He equips those He calls with exactly what they need to obey.
