Luke 20:45

Then in the audience of all the people, he said vnto his disciples, Luke 20:45 (KJV)

“46 Beware of the scribes, which love to go about in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost places at feasts; Which devour widows’ houses, and for a show make lengthy prayers: these shall receive greater condemnation.”

In this passage, Jesus addresses the behaviour and attitudes of the scribes, who were religious scholars and experts in the law. He cautions His disciples and the crowd to be cautious of their actions and motives.

The scribes were known for seeking honour and recognition, desiring to be esteemed highly by others. They enjoyed wearing long robes, being greeted with respect in public places, and occupying prominent seats in the synagogues and at feasts.

However, their outward piety and apparent religious devotion were often overshadowed by their exploitation of vulnerable people, particularly widows. Jesus condemns their hypocrisy and exposes their true nature.

Despite their public displays of spirituality, the scribes were unjustly taking advantage of widows, possibly through deceitful practices or devouring their resources. Jesus states that they make long prayers as a show, implying that their religious actions were not genuine but done for appearances.

The warning given by Jesus in this passage is a call to discernment and a reminder to evaluate the motives and actions of religious leaders and individuals. He warns against those who seek self-exaltation and material gain while neglecting their responsibility to care for and protect the vulnerable, such as widows.
