Luke 21:4
For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.
Luke 21:4 (KJV)
Context
Jesus sits near the temple treasury and watches as people bring their offerings. The rich contribute large sums from their abundance, while a poor widow places in two small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. Jesus then tells his disciples that this widow has put in more than all the others.
Meaning
Jesus explains why her gift surpasses theirs: the rich gave out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, cast in all the living that she had. The Greek word translated “living” (bios) refers to her livelihood or means of subsistence, not merely spare money. Her offering was not significant for its monetary value but because it represented complete trust in God, giving up her own security.
Biblical connections
The parallel account in Mark 12:41-44 records the same event and teaching, confirming the lesson’s importance. The widow’s example illustrates the principle that true giving is measured not by the amount but by the heart and sacrifice behind it.
Application
This passage challenges believers to examine their own attitudes toward giving. It reminds us that God values the motive and attitude behind our offerings, not just the size. The widow’s faith encourages us to give sacrificially, trusting in God’s provision and recognizing that all we have ultimately belongs to Him.
Reflection
Her act of giving all she had demonstrates profound faith and dependence on God. It calls us to consider whether our giving flows from abundance or from a heart fully devoted to Him, even when it costs us something real.
