Listen to this article

For all these haue of their abundance cast in vnto the offerings of God, but shee of her penurie hath cast in all the liuing that she had. Luke 21:4 (KJV)

Context: Before we dive into the verse itself, it is important to understand the setting of Luke 21. The chapter opens with Jesus observing people placing their offerings into the temple treasury. He points out the striking contrast between the wealthy individuals who gave out of their abundance and the poor widow who gave sacrificially.

The Actions of Others: In the preceding verses (Luke 21:1‑3), Jesus notes that the rich were casting large sums of money as gifts. Their donations were made from surplus or abundance, so the contributions did not significantly affect their financial well‑being. Though commendable, their giving required little personal sacrifice.

The Widow’s Offering: In direct contrast, the poor widow’s offering is highlighted. Jesus draws attention to her act of giving “all the living that she had,” meaning she contributed everything she possessed for her livelihood. This act demonstrates profound faith, trust, and complete dependence on God.

Spiritual Significance: The widow’s offering teaches essential lessons about generosity, sacrificial giving, and trust in God. Despite her poverty, she willingly gave everything she owned. Her example shows that true giving is measured not by the amount but by the heart behind the gift. It reflects a deep devotion to God and an understanding that all possessions ultimately belong to Him.

Lessons for Us: This passage challenges each believer to examine personal attitudes toward giving and generosity. It reminds us that God values both the amount and, more importantly, the motive and attitude behind our offerings. The widow’s example encourages us to give sacrificially, trusting in God’s provision and recognizing that our resources are ultimately His.
