Luke 21:30
When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand.
Luke 21:30 (KJV)
Context
Luke 21:30 is part of the Olivet Discourse, where Jesus speaks to His disciples about the signs that will precede His second coming and the end of the age. In the previous verse, He gives a simple parable: look at the fig tree and all the trees. When they shoot forth their buds and leaves, you can see and know for yourselves that summer is near. The lesson is that the evidence is plain and obvious; no one needs to be told. In the same way, the signs Jesus has described—wars, natural disasters, persecution, and false prophets—are meant to be discernible to those who are watching.
Meaning
The phrase “of your own selves” is significant. It indicates that the knowledge of the season is self-evident from the signs themselves. Just as budding trees make it clear that summer is approaching, so the events Jesus lists make it clear that the kingdom of God is near. The verse does not give a specific date, but it calls for watchfulness and readiness. The certainty and nearness of the Kingdom’s coming are underscored, along with the believer’s responsibility to be spiritually alert.
In Luke 21:31, Jesus applies the lesson directly: “So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.” The budding trees are a parable of recognizing the approaching Kingdom. While the fig tree is sometimes interpreted as a symbol of Israel, the inclusion of “all the trees” broadens the illustration, making it a general lesson about discerning the times.
Application
For believers, the lesson is practical: learn to read the spiritual signs of the times. Just as the changing trees signal the change of season, so world events and spiritual conditions can signal the nearness of Christ’s return. This calls for a life of readiness, prayer, and faithful obedience. Rather than setting dates, the Christian is to live in constant expectation, knowing that the Kingdom is near and that every sign fulfilled is a reminder to be prepared.
Reflection
Consider the natural certainty of the changing seasons. When you see the leaves budding, you do not doubt that summer is coming. In the same way, the signs Jesus gave are trustworthy indicators. They invite you to trust His words and to live with hope and vigilance. The verse encourages a quiet confidence: God’s purposes are moving forward, and the believer who watches will not be taken by surprise.
