Luke 21:21

Then let them which are in Iudea, flee to the mountaines, and let them which are in the midst of it, depart out, and let not them that are in the countreys, enter thereinto. Luke 21:21 (KJV)

To better understand the meaning of this verse, it’s important to consider its context. Luke 21 records Jesus’ teachings on the signs of the end times and the destruction of Jerusalem. In this chapter, Jesus speaks about the coming tribulations, the signs in the heavens and on earth, and the persecution that His followers will face.

In this verse, Jesus advises those in Judea to flee to the mountains when they see Jerusalem surrounded by armies (Luke 21:20). The mountains would provide a safer place, away from the imminent danger and destruction that would befall Jerusalem.

This verse has a historical context related to the events leading up to the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. The Roman armies, under the leadership of General Titus, besieged the city, leading to its eventual destruction. Many Christians heeded Jesus’ warning and escaped before the downfall; tradition holds that some early believers left the city, though specific numbers are not recorded.

While the verse originally had a specific historical fulfillment, there are also spiritual lessons we can draw today. It reminds believers to be watchful and discerning of the signs of the times and to be prepared for trials and tribulations that may come their way.

Jesus’ instruction to flee to the mountains shows the importance of listening to God’s voice and following His guidance. Just as the early Christians were directed to seek safety, we too are encouraged to seek God’s wisdom and guidance in times of trouble. He is our refuge and strength (Psalm 46:1), and when we trust in Him, He will lead us on the right path.

Jesus also advises those in the surrounding countries not to enter Jerusalem during this time. This can be seen as a warning not to become entangled in worldly affairs and distractions that might hinder our ability to respond to God’s call and move toward safety.

Luke 21:21 serves as a reminder that, as followers of Christ, we need to be attentive to the signs around us and seek God’s guidance in all aspects of our lives. It encourages us to stay focused on our spiritual journey, not being weighed down by worldly distractions. Ultimately, our trust should be in God, who is our protector and guide in times of trouble.
