Luke 21:20

And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.

Context

This verse belongs to the Olivet Discourse, Jesus’ teaching on the Mount of Olives about the future, including the destruction of the temple and Jerusalem (Luke 21:5-7). In the preceding verses, Jesus warns of false prophets, wars, natural disasters, and persecution. Here He narrows the focus to a specific sign: Jerusalem surrounded by armies.

Jesus’ words point to a historical event. In A.D. 70, Roman armies under General Titus besieged Jerusalem and destroyed the city and the temple. The encircling armies were a clear signal that desolation was imminent, not a call to fight but a call to recognize the coming judgment.

Meaning

The phrase “compassed with armies” describes a military encirclement that leaves no doubt about the city’s fate. Jesus says, “then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.” This knowledge was meant to prompt action, as the following verses instruct those in Judea to flee to the mountains (Luke 21:21). Seeing the armies was not a reason to resist but a reason to escape.

This prophecy echoes Jesus’ earlier lament over Jerusalem in Luke 19:43-44, where He foretold that enemies would encircle the city because it did not recognize the time of God’s visitation. The siege was both a historical event and an act of divine judgment.
