Luke 21:19

Listen to this article

“In your patience possess ye your souls.”

Context:Luke 21:19 is part of a larger passage known as the Olivet Discourse, where Jesus speaks to His disciples about the signs of the end times and the destruction of Jerusalem. In this specific verse, Jesus emphasizes the importance of patience in preserving one’s soul amid the trials and tribulations that will come.

The Virtue of Patience:Patience is a key virtue emphasized throughout the Bible. It involves enduring hardships, waiting on God’s timing, and trusting in His faithfulness. In this verse, Jesus encourages His disciples, and by extension, all believers, to cultivate patience as a means of protecting their inner selves or souls.

Possessing Your Souls:The phrase "possess ye your souls" can be understood as taking ownership or guarding one’s soul. In the face of challenging circumstances, maintaining a patient and steadfast attitude helps believers remain anchored in their faith. It involves keeping calm and composed, rather than being overwhelmed or succumbing to fear, doubt, or despair.

Relationship with God:Possessing one’s soul through patience requires a deep trust and reliance on God. It involves surrendering our anxieties and worries to Him, knowing that He is in control. By developing patience, we acknowledge that God’s plans and timing are perfect, even when we don’t understand or see the immediate results.

The Fruit of Patience:Patience produces various fruits in our lives, including perseverance, resilience, and spiritual growth. As we patiently endure trials, we develop character and mature in our faith. James 1:3-4 (KJV) echoes this sentiment, stating, "Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing."

Application:In our daily lives, we encounter numerous challenges and uncertainties. Luke 21:19 reminds us to cultivate patience as we navigate these difficulties. By doing so, we guard our souls from being consumed by worry, fear, or impatience. Instead, we can rely on God’s strength and trust in His promises, knowing that He is with us in every situation.

  • Prayer:As you reflect on Luke 21:19, take a moment to pray and ask God to help you develop patience in your life. Ask Him to grant you the ability to trust in His timing, to remain steadfast in the face of trials, and to guard your soul from negative emotions and attitudes. Seek His guidance and wisdom as you grow in patience, relying on Him every step of the way.

Remember, studying the Bible is an ongoing process, and it’s beneficial to explore various translations, consult commentaries, and seek guidance from trusted spiritual mentors to gain a deeper understanding of the Scriptures.
