Luke 22:46

Listen to this article

And said vnto them, Why sleepe yee? Rise, and pray, lest yee enter into temptation. Luke 22:46 (KJV)

And said unto them,

Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. Luke 22:46 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the larger narrative of the Garden of Gethsemane, the night when Jesus prepared for His imminent betrayal and crucifixion. He took His closest disciples to the Mount of Olives to pray, while the other followers remained nearby. After He had fervently prayed, He returned to find the disciples sleeping, both physically weary and spiritually inattentive.

Jesus then rebukes them, asking, “Why sleep ye?” (also rendered in some translations as “Why sleepest thou?”). The question draws their attention to their lethargy and to the seriousness of the moment, highlighting their failure to grasp the gravity of the events that were about to unfold.

Following the rebuke, He commands, “rise and pray,” emphasizing that prayer is the essential discipline that sustains believers. The surrounding passages (Luke 22:39‑45) show Jesus urging His followers to stay awake and join Him in communion with the Father, underscoring prayer as the means by which believers draw strength, seek guidance, and remain connected to God.

He concludes with a warning: “lest ye enter into temptation.” Without vigilant prayer, the disciples—and by extension all believers—are vulnerable to the trials and temptations that accompany spiritual struggle. The admonition serves as a reminder that prayer and watchfulness are the safeguards against falling into sin.

From this verse we learn several enduring lessons. First, an active and consistent prayer life is vital; just as Jesus sought communion with the Father, we are called to prioritize prayer in our daily walk. Second, spiritual alertness is required; we must remain awake to the battles that surround us and rely on prayer to fortify our spirits. Third, resisting temptation is possible only through dependence on God’s strength, cultivated in prayer. Finally, Jesus’ question invites personal self‑examination: Are we spiritually awake and engaged, or are we slumbering in complacency? In sum, Luke 22:46 calls believers to prioritize prayer, maintain vigilance, and seek God’s power to overcome the temptations and trials of life.
