Luke 24:47

“And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”

Context:Luke 24 records the events that took place after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In this particular verse, Jesus appears to his disciples after his resurrection and opens their understanding of the Scriptures. He commissions them to preach repentance and forgiveness of sins in his name to all nations, starting from Jerusalem.

Repentance:The first part of the verse emphasizes the importance of repentance. Repentance involves recognizing one’s sins, feeling godly sorrow for them, confessing them before God, and turning away from them. It is a necessary response to the Gospel message, as it acknowledges the need for a change of heart and a turning towards God. Repentance is a foundational step in the Christian journey.

Remission of Sins:The second part of the verse speaks of the remission or forgiveness of sins. Through Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross and subsequent resurrection, he made it possible for the forgiveness of sins to be offered to all who believe in him. The message of the Gospel is centered on the forgiveness of sins through faith in Jesus Christ. This forgiveness is available to all people, regardless of their nationality or background.

Preached in His Name:Jesus specifically instructs his disciples to preach repentance and the forgiveness of sins in his name. This signifies that their proclamation is not merely their own message but is rooted in the authority and power of Jesus Christ. The disciples were to proclaim the good news of salvation, pointing people to Jesus as the only way to find forgiveness and reconciliation with God.

Among All Nations:Jesus’ commission extends beyond the boundaries of Israel. He instructs his disciples to take the message of repentance and forgiveness of sins to all nations. This emphasizes the universal scope of the Gospel. The offer of salvation is not limited to a specific group of people but is intended for people from every nation, tribe, and tongue.

Beginning at Jerusalem:Although the Gospel is meant to be proclaimed throughout the world, Jesus instructs his disciples to start in Jerusalem. Jerusalem was the city where Jesus was crucified and resurrected, and it held great significance as the birthplace of the Church. The message of repentance and forgiveness of sins was to be proclaimed first to the people of Jerusalem before spreading to other regions.
