Luke 24:16

“But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.”

Context:Luke 24 recounts the events that took place on the day of Jesus’ resurrection. Two disciples were traveling to the village of Emmaus, discussing the recent crucifixion of Jesus and the reports of his empty tomb. As they were engrossed in conversation, Jesus himself drew near to them but concealed his identity from them.

The phrase “their eyes were holden” implies that the disciples’ eyes were prevented or restrained from recognizing Jesus. This spiritual blindness prevented them from perceiving Jesus’ true identity even though he was walking and conversing with them. It is important to note that this lack of recognition was not due to any physical alteration in Jesus but was divinely ordained.

The reason behind their inability to recognize Jesus was twofold. First, it was a result of their own limited understanding and unbelief. Despite hearing reports of the resurrection and encountering angels at the empty tomb, the disciples struggled to comprehend the significance of these events. Their spiritual understanding was clouded, leading to a lack of recognition.

Secondly, Jesus purposely chose to conceal his identity from them. He desired to test their faith and engage in a teaching moment. By remaining incognito, Jesus provided an opportunity for the disciples to express their thoughts and reveal their doubts and uncertainties. This would later serve as a foundation for Jesus to teach and enlighten them about the fulfillment of the Scriptures in his death and resurrection.

The significance of this verse extends beyond the immediate context. It reminds us that spiritual understanding often requires divine revelation. It emphasizes the importance of faith and openness to God’s truth. The disciples, blinded by their limited perspective, failed to recognize the resurrected Jesus. Likewise, we must be open to God’s leading, seeking His wisdom and understanding, so that we may recognize His presence and work in our lives.

  • Seek spiritual understanding:The disciples’ lack of recognition highlights the importance of seeking spiritual insight. We should strive to deepen our understanding of God’s Word and His plans for our lives through prayer, study, and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
  • Be open to divine revelation:Just as the disciples’ eyes were opened to recognize Jesus, we should be open to God’s revelation and guidance in our lives. This requires humility, a willingness to learn, and a readiness to accept God’s truth even when it challenges our preconceived notions.
  • Cultivate faith and trust:The disciples’ struggle to recognize Jesus was rooted in their lack of faith and limited understanding. We should cultivate faith in God’s promises and trust that He is at work in our lives, even when we may not immediately understand His plans or recognize His presence.
  • Engage in dialogue with Jesus:The conversation between Jesus and the disciples on the road to Emmaus serves as a model for engaging in dialogue with Jesus. We should be willing to express our doubts, questions, and concerns to Him, knowing that He is patient and ready to teach and reveal His truth to us.

By reflecting on these lessons and applying them to our lives, we can grow in our spiritual understanding and develop a deeper relationship with God.
