John 1:4

In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

John 1:4 (KJV)

The Gospel of John opens with a prologue (John 1:1-18) that introduces Jesus Christ as the eternal Word (Logos) who was with God and was God. John 1:4 belongs to this prologue, which highlights the preexistence and eternal nature of Jesus. The immediate context shows that all things were made through Him (John 1:3), and now the apostle declares that in Him was life, and that life was the light of men.

The phrase “In him was life” means that Jesus possesses life within Himself. This is not merely biological existence but original, independent, and eternal life. Jesus is the author of life, and through Him all things were created (John 1:3). This life is the source of all spiritual and eternal life for humanity. The life that is in Him is not derived from another but is essential to His divine nature, consistent with the Father who has life in Himself and has granted the Son to have life in Himself (John 5:26).

The second clause, “and the life was the light of men,” explains that this divine life shines into human experience as light. In Scripture, light often symbolizes knowledge, truth, and guidance. Here, it refers to the spiritual enlightenment and understanding that Jesus brings. He reveals the truth about God, salvation, and the way to eternal life. All that is true light in humanity—knowledge, integrity, love, wisdom, and holy joy—has its fountain in the essential life of the Word.

John 8:12 echoes this theme: Jesus says, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” This verse connects following Jesus with receiving the light of life, showing that the life and light of John 1:4 are personally available to believers.

John 14:6 further affirms Jesus as “the way, the truth, and the life,” declaring that no one comes to the Father except through Him. This reinforces His exclusive role as the source of life and truth.

1 John 1:5 states that “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” Since Jesus is God in human form, He embodies the divine light and reflects God’s character to humanity. The life that is the light of men continues to shine in this dark world through believers who live as children of light.

  • Jesus offers us spiritual life: Through Jesus, we receive not only physical existence but also the opportunity for abundant, eternal life. By accepting Him as our Lord and Savior, we enter into a personal relationship with Him and experience the fullness of life that He provides.

  • Jesus illuminates our path: As the light of the world, Jesus guides us out of spiritual darkness. He reveals the truth about ourselves, our purpose, and the nature of God. Through His teachings, we gain wisdom and understanding to navigate life’s challenges and make choices that align with God’s will.

  • We are called to reflect His light: Just as Jesus is the light of the world, we are called to be lights in the world (Matthew 5:14). As followers of Christ, we should allow His life and light to shine through us, illuminating the lives of others and pointing them towards Him.

The life that is in Jesus is not a distant concept but a present reality. It is the same life that raised Him from the dead and now indwells every believer. As we abide in Him, His life becomes our light, guiding our steps and transforming our character. Let us walk in that light, knowing that the darkness of this world cannot overcome it.
