John 1:4

Listen to this article

“In him was life; and the life was the light of men.”

Context and Background:The Gospel of John is a unique book in the New Testament that emphasises the divinity of Jesus Christ. John’s purpose in writing this gospel is to present Jesus as the eternal Word of God who became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14). The verse we are studying, John 1:4, is part of the prologue of John’s Gospel, which highlights the preexistence and eternal nature of Jesus.

Meaning and Significance:a. “In him was life”: This phrase emphasises that Jesus possesses life within Himself. It points to His divine nature as the source and giver of life. Jesus is the author of life, and through Him, all things were created (John 1:3). This life is not limited to physical existence but includes spiritual and eternal life.

b. “The life was the light of men”: The term “light” often symbolises knowledge, truth, and guidance. Here, it refers to the spiritual enlightenment and understanding that Jesus brings to humanity. As the light of the world (John 8:12), Jesus dispels darkness, ignorance, and sin. He reveals the truth about God, salvation, and the way to eternal life.

Connections to other Bible passages:a. John 8:12 (KJV): “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” This verse echoes the theme of Jesus as the light, emphasising that those who follow Him will have spiritual enlightenment and life.

b. John 14:6 (KJV): “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Here, Jesus declares Himself as the exclusive path to God the Father, further affirming His role as the source of life and truth.

c. 1 John 1:5 (KJV): “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” This verse connects the concept of light with God’s nature. Jesus, being God in human form, embodies the divine light and reflects God’s character to humanity.

  • Jesus offers us spiritual life:Through Jesus, we receive not only physical existence but also the opportunity for abundant, eternal life. By accepting Him as our Lord and Savior, we enter into a personal relationship with Him and experience the fullness of life that He provides.
  • Jesus illuminates our path:As the light of the world, Jesus guides us out of spiritual darkness. He reveals the truth about ourselves, our purpose, and the nature of God. Through His teachings, we gain wisdom and understanding to navigate life’s challenges and make choices that align with God’s will.
  • We are called to reflect His light:Just as Jesus is the light of the world, we are called to be lights in the world (Matthew 5:14). As followers of Christ, we should allow His life and light to shine through us, illuminating the lives of others and pointing them towards Him.

Remember, this Bible study provides a brief overview and application of John 1:4. Further exploration and study of the entire Gospel of John will deepen your understanding of Jesus’ life, teachings, and purpose.
