John 1:18
“No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.”
Context:The Gospel of John was written by the Apostle John to present Jesus Christ as the divine Son of God. John’s purpose was to deepen the reader’s faith in Jesus as the Messiah and Son of God who brings eternal life.
“No man hath seen God at any time”:This phrase emphasizes the transcendence and invisibility of God. It highlights the fact that no human being has ever directly beheld the fullness of God’s glory. Although people in the Old Testament had encounters with God in various forms (such as the burning bush with Moses or the theophanies), they did not see God in His complete essence.
“The only begotten Son”:This phrase refers to Jesus Christ. It emphasises His unique relationship with the Father. Jesus is the only Son who shares the same divine nature as the Father. The term “begotten” implies the eternal generation of the Son, expressing His eternal existence and oneness with the Father.
“Which is in the bosom of the Father”:This phrase describes the intimate relationship between the Father and the Son. It conveys the close, loving, and unique connection that Jesus has with the Father. The imagery of being in the bosom indicates a position of utmost closeness and affection.
“He hath declared him”:This phrase signifies that Jesus, as the only begotten Son, has made God known. Jesus is the ultimate revelation of God to humanity. Through His life, teachings, and actions, Jesus fully revealed the character, nature, and will of the Father. Jesus is the embodiment of God’s love, grace, and truth.
Overall, John 1:18 emphasises the uniqueness and divinity of Jesus Christ as the Son of God. It highlights that no one has seen God directly, but Jesus, who is intimately connected with the Father, has fully revealed Him to humanity.
