John 1:16
And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.
John 1:16 (KJV)
Context
This verse appears in the prologue of John’s Gospel, where Jesus is introduced as the Word (Logos) who was with God in the beginning and was God Himself. Verse 16 comes immediately after the declaration that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth (John 1:14).
Meaning
“And of his fulness” refers to the abundance of Jesus. The apostle John highlights that Jesus, as the Son of God, possesses an overflowing completeness in every aspect. Jesus is the embodiment of God’s glory, power, and attributes. The fullness of the Godhead is incommunicable, but the fullness of grace and truth in Christ is communicable to believers.
“Have all we received” indicates that the recipients of this fullness are believers in Jesus Christ. It includes all who have put their faith in Him, both the original audience of John’s Gospel and believers throughout history. As believers, we have the privilege of receiving from the fullness of Christ.
“Grace for grace” can be interpreted in a couple of ways. One interpretation suggests that believers receive grace upon grace from the fullness of Christ—continuously receiving God’s abundant grace, poured out in increasing measure. This emphasizes that God’s grace is never exhausted but constantly available. Another interpretation suggests that “grace for grace” implies the new covenant through Jesus Christ supersedes the old covenant of the Law. The Law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ (John 1:17). Under the new covenant, believers receive grace rather than being bound by the requirements of the Law.
Biblical connections
The phrase “grace for grace” connects to John 1:17, where the contrast between the Law and grace is made explicit. The verse also echoes the testimony of the evangelist in John 1:14, where the glory of the Word is described as full of grace and truth. This theme of receiving from Christ’s fullness recurs throughout John’s writings, emphasizing that all spiritual blessings derive from Him.
Application
John 1:16 assures believers that through faith in Jesus Christ, they have access to the fullness of His grace. This grace is not a single act but an ongoing, inexhaustible supply—one gift after another. It emphasizes the abundant provision of God’s grace, which is not only sufficient but overflowing. This verse highlights the unique role of Jesus Christ as the source of all spiritual blessings and the embodiment of grace and truth.
Reflection
Consider the reality that every spiritual blessing you receive comes from Christ’s fullness, not from your own merit. His grace is continually available, replacing and exceeding what came before. Rest in the assurance that His supply never runs dry.
