John 1:15
“John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.”
Context:The Gospel of John begins with a prologue that introduces Jesus as the Word (Logos) who was with God in the beginning and was God. John the Baptist is introduced as a witness who came to bear witness of Jesus.
John’s Testimony:In verse 15, John the Baptist testifies about Jesus. He declares that Jesus is the one he had spoken about before. This implies that John had foreknowledge or revelation regarding Jesus’ identity and purpose.
Preeminence of Jesus:John says, “He that cometh after me is preferred before me.” This statement highlights the preeminence of Jesus over John. Although John was born before Jesus in human terms, John acknowledges that Jesus is greater than him. John recognises Jesus’ divine nature and authority.
Eternality of Jesus:John adds, “for he was before me.” This statement emphasises the eternal existence of Jesus. Although John was born before Jesus chronologically, John acknowledges that Jesus existed before him. It points to the preexistence of Jesus as the eternal Word of God.
Implications:John’s testimony reveals that Jesus is the one who surpasses him in importance and authority. It also highlights the eternal nature of Jesus, affirming his divine identity. This verse sets the stage for the revelation of Jesus’ ministry and purpose as the Son of God.
Application:As believers, we can learn from John’s testimony. Like John, we should bear witness to Jesus and acknowledge his preeminence. We must recognise Jesus’ divine nature and give him the highest place in our lives. Just as John pointed others to Jesus, we should also testify about Christ and proclaim his redemptive work to others.
