John 4:13

Posted on 18 May at 14:37

“Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again”

Certainly! Here’s a Bible study on Verse: “Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again” (John 4:13, KJV).

Context:This verse is part of a conversation between Jesus and a Samaritan woman at the well of Jacob. Jesus, who was tired from his journey, asked the woman for a drink of water. In response, Jesus tells her about the living water that He can give, which will become a wellspring within the person, leading to eternal life.

Key Points:

  • Spiritual Thirst:Jesus begins by pointing out that whoever drinks from the well water will thirst again. He uses this physical example to draw attention to a deeper spiritual truth. Human beings have a spiritual thirst or longing that cannot be satisfied by worldly things alone. People may try to find satisfaction in various pursuits such as wealth, relationships, or success, but they will always feel a sense of emptiness and dissatisfaction without a true connection with God.
  • The Living Water:Jesus contrasts the temporary satisfaction that comes from worldly pursuits with the everlasting satisfaction found in Him. In the following verses (John 4:14-15), He explains, “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” Jesus offers a spiritual drink that brings lasting satisfaction and eternal life. This living water represents the Holy Spirit, who indwells believers and satisfies their deepest longings.
  • Spiritual Transformation:When a person receives the living water from Jesus, they experience a transformation. They move from a state of spiritual thirst and emptiness to a state of fulfillment and satisfaction in their relationship with God. The Holy Spirit brings about a new life, filling the believer with love, joy, peace, and other fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). This transformation is not a one-time event but an ongoing process of growing in faith and deepening the relationship with Christ.

Universal Offer:Jesus’ words “whosoever drinketh” emphasize the inclusiveness of His offer. The living water is available to all who come to Him in faith, regardless of their background, nationality, or social status. Jesus’ interaction with the Samaritan woman itself is a powerful example of His willingness to reach out to people considered outcasts or outsiders by society. This verse highlights the universal nature of Jesus’ invitation, demonstrating His desire to quench the spiritual thirst of all who seek Him.

Application:

  • Recognizing Our Thirst:Take time to reflect on your own life and consider the areas where you have been seeking satisfaction apart from God. Acknowledge any areas of spiritual thirst or emptiness that you have been trying to fill with worldly pursuits.
  • Seeking the Living Water:Turn to Jesus and seek His living water. Spend time in prayer, reading the Bible, and cultivating a relationship with Him. Surrender your desires, hopes, and dreams to God, trusting that He alone can truly satisfy your deepest longings.
  • Sharing the Living Water:Just as Jesus offered the living water to the Samaritan woman, we are called to share the good news of Jesus with others. Look for opportunities to share the hope and satisfaction found in Christ with those who are spiritually thirsty. Demonstrate God’s love through acts of kindness and compassion, pointing others to the source of true fulfillment.

Remember, John 4:13 reminds us that the things of this world can never fully satisfy our deepest longings. Only Jesus and the living water He offers can bring lasting fulfilment and eternal life.
