John 3:9

Posted on 18 May at 14:37

“Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?”

Context:John 3:9 is a part of the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews. Nicodemus came to Jesus by night to inquire about Jesus’ teachings and his identity as a teacher sent from God.

Questioning the Supernatural:Nicodemus’ response reveals his confusion and scepticism about Jesus’ teachings. Jesus had just spoken about the necessity of being born again or born from above (John 3:3-8). Nicodemus finds it difficult to grasp this concept.

Nicodemus’ Limited Perspective:Nicodemus was a learned religious leader, but he was bound by his earthly understanding. He struggled to comprehend spiritual truths because he approached them with a purely natural mindset. His question reflects his struggle to reconcile Jesus’ words with his pre-existing knowledge.

Spiritual Rebirth:Jesus’ statement about being born again is a reference to the transformation that takes place when a person puts their faith in Him. It is a spiritual rebirth, where the Holy Spirit works in a person’s heart, bringing about a new life and a new nature (2 Corinthians 5:17).

The Need for Faith:Nicodemus’ question highlights the importance of faith in understanding and accepting spiritual truths. Without faith, it is challenging to grasp the mysteries of God’s kingdom. Jesus encourages Nicodemus to trust in Him and His teachings, even if they surpass human understanding.

The Role of God’s Sovereignty:Jesus’ response to Nicodemus’ question reveals the sovereignty of God in the process of salvation. Jesus explains that the new birth is a work of the Spirit, emphasizing that it is not something that humans can accomplish on their own. Salvation is a divine act of grace.

Application to Our Lives:Nicodemus’ question resonates with us today. We may also struggle to understand certain spiritual truths or find it challenging to accept things that seem beyond our comprehension. In such times, it is essential to approach God’s Word with humility and faith, trusting that God’s wisdom surpasses our limited understanding.

Overall, John 3:9 reminds us of the importance of faith in comprehending spiritual truths and the need to rely on God’s grace for transformation. It encourages us to approach God’s Word with an open heart and a willingness to submit our understanding to His divine wisdom.
