John 4:14

Posted on 18 May at 14:05

But whosoeuer drinketh of the water that I shal giue him, shall neuer thirst: but the water that I shall giue him, shalbe in him a well of water springing vp into euerlasting life. John 4:14 (KJV)

“Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”

Context: John 4:14 is part of a conversation between Jesus and a Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well in the town of Sychar. Jesus asked the woman for a drink, which led to a discussion about living water and true worship.

Symbolism of Water:

Water is used metaphorically throughout Scripture to represent cleansing, renewal, and eternal life. In this passage Jesus uses the physical water from the well as a metaphor for the temporary satisfaction that worldly things provide, contrasting it with the “water” He can give, which symbolizes spiritual refreshment and eternal satisfaction found in a relationship with Him.

Thirsting Again:

Jesus states that anyone who drinks the water from the well will thirst again. This highlights the insufficiency of worldly pursuits to satisfy the deepest longings of the human heart. No matter how much material wealth, success, or pleasure one may attain, there will always be a sense of emptiness and a longing for something more.

Water of Eternal Life:

Jesus contrasts the temporary thirst of physical water with the water He offers, which provides a permanent solution to spiritual thirst. He promises that those who drink of the water He gives will never thirst again, indicating the complete satisfaction and fulfillment that can be found in a relationship with Him.

A Well of Water Springing up into Everlasting Life:

Jesus further emphasizes the transformative nature of the water He offers. It becomes a source within the believer, like a well of water, springing up into everlasting life. This imagery suggests that the life‑giving water from Jesus continually bubbles up within the believer, nourishing the soul and leading to eternal life.

Application:

This passage reminds us that true satisfaction and fulfillment can only be found in Jesus Christ. It calls us to recognize the futility of pursuing worldly pleasures and to seek the living water that only He can provide. When we accept His offer, we receive spiritual refreshment, everlasting life, and a continuous source of renewal within us.

In summary, John 4:14 conveys the message of Jesus as the source of true satisfaction and eternal life. It encourages us to turn away from temporary pursuits and embrace the spiritual refreshment found in a relationship with Him.
