John 4:17

Posted on 18 May at 14:05

The woman answered, and said, I haue no husband. Iesus said vnto her, Thou hast well said, I haue no husband: John 4:17 (KJV)

The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her,

Thou hast well said, I have no husband: John 4:17 (KJV)

John 4:17 is part of a conversation between Jesus and a Samaritan woman at the well of Jacob. This encounter takes place in Sychar, a village in Samaria, and forms a small portion of the larger narrative found in John 4:1‑42, often referred to as the story of the Samaritan woman or the woman at the well.

In this verse the Samaritan woman responds to Jesus’ statement about her personal life by saying, “I have no husband.” Jesus acknowledges her response by affirming, “Thou hast well said, I have no husband.” This interaction is significant for several reasons. The woman’s response indicates that she evaded the truth of her situation, revealing Jesus’ divine knowledge and understanding of her life even though they had just met. It demonstrates Jesus’ ability to discern reality despite her evasion.

The woman’s answer also reveals that she was cohabiting with a man who was not her husband, indicating a sinful lifestyle or a broken marital situation. Jesus’ response does not condemn her but addresses the reality of her situation through His divine insight. The conversation at the well is centered around Jesus’ offer of “living water” (John 4:10) that leads to eternal life. By engaging with the woman and revealing her personal life, Jesus shows that He has come to offer forgiveness, redemption, and a fresh start to all who believe in Him.

From this passage we learn that Jesus knows and understands our hearts. Just as He had insight into the woman’s life, He knows each one of us intimately, aware of our struggles, sins, and brokenness. We can approach Him with honesty, knowing that He understands and offers forgiveness and healing. The encounter demonstrates Jesus’ willingness to extend grace and forgiveness regardless of our past; He came to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10) and offers forgiveness to all who turn to Him in repentance.

Honesty is valued by Jesus. The woman’s honest response was acknowledged, showing that He values sincerity and transparency. While the woman evaded full disclosure, Jesus’ response shows He understands human frailty and offers grace even when we are not fully honest, inviting us to seek His redemption regardless of our evasions or sins.

Finally, the well encounter teaches that Jesus offers a fresh start. No matter what mistakes we have made, He offers a chance to be born again (John 3:3) and start afresh through faith in Him.
