John 4:25
The woman saith vnto him, I know that Messias commeth, which is called Christ: when he is come, hee will tell vs all things. John 4:25 (KJV)
Context: This verse is part of the conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well. Jesus had initiated a conversation with her, revealing His knowledge of her personal life and offering her “living water” (John 4:10), which symbolizes eternal life. The woman, surprised by Jesus’ insights, acknowledged her understanding of the Messiah’s coming.
The woman acknowledged her knowledge of the Messiah, whom she referred to as the “Messias” and “Christ.” This reveals that the expectation of the Messiah was present among the Samaritans as well. The Samaritans, a distinct group from the Jewish people, and the Jewish people, including the Samaritans, were eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Messiah, who would be the Anointed One, the Savior, and the One who would fulfill the prophecies within their sacred texts and the prophecies of the Old Testament.
The Messiah as the Source of Knowledge: The woman believed that when the Messiah came, He would reveal all things. Her statement suggests a recognition that the Messiah would possess divine wisdom and understanding. In Samaritan tradition, and in Jewish tradition, the Messiah was expected to be a teacher who would bring revelation and insight into the truths of God.
Jesus as the Fulfillment of Messianic Expectation: The woman’s expectation of the Messiah finds its fulfillment in Jesus. In the subsequent verses, Jesus reveals Himself to the woman as the Messiah she has been waiting for (John 4:26). He affirms her belief and declares that He is indeed the Christ, the long‑awaited Savior.
Recognizing the Messiah: The woman’s acknowledgment of the Messiah’s coming reminds us of the importance of recognizing Jesus as the promised Messiah. Just as the woman had heard about the Messiah and acknowledged His future coming, we have the privilege of knowing that Jesus has already come and fulfilled the Messianic prophecies. We are called to believe in Him and accept Him as our Savior and Lord.
Jesus as the Source of Knowledge: The woman’s expectation that the Messiah would reveal all things highlights Jesus’ role as the ultimate source of knowledge and truth. As believers, we have access to the teachings of Jesus through the Scriptures. We can seek Him through prayer, study His Word, and rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit to gain understanding and wisdom in our lives.
Embracing Jesus’ Revelation: Just as Jesus revealed Himself as the Messiah to the woman, He continues to reveal Himself to us today. We can deepen our understanding of Jesus and His teachings by spending time in prayer, studying the Scriptures, and seeking a personal relationship with Him. Jesus desires to share His truth and wisdom with us, transforming our lives and drawing us closer to God.
In summary, John 4:25 captures the expectation of the Messiah and highlights Jesus’ role as the fulfiller of that expectation. As believers, we can recognize Jesus as the Messiah, embrace Him as the ultimate source of knowledge, and seek His revelation in our lives.
