John 5:44
How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

Context
Jesus speaks here to Jewish religious leaders who are seeking to kill Him because He healed a man on the Sabbath. Their hostility frames the question He asks: how can they believe while they crave honor from one another and neglect the honor that comes from God alone?
Meaning
Jesus exposes a spiritual blindness caused by the love of human approval. The leaders valued the praise and recognition of their peers more than the approval of God. This misplaced priority made it impossible for them to accept Jesus, who came in humility rather than with the pomp they expected. Their desire for human honor became a stumbling block to faith.
The honor that comes from God only is the true glory that matters. Seeking God’s approval should be the believer’s primary focus. When the heart is set on pleasing God rather than people, it opens the way to receive the honor He gives.
Biblical connections
Jesus had already stated that He did not receive honor from men (John 5:41), contrasting His own example with the leaders’ craving for human praise. The same problem appears in John 12:43, where some believed but loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. These passages reinforce the truth that the love of human praise can hinder genuine faith.
Application
This verse challenges us to examine our motives. Are we seeking the approval of others, or are we seeking to honor God in all we do?
