John 6:6

And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.

John 6:6 (KJV)

In John 6, Jesus had been attracting large crowds through His miracles, teachings, and healings. As the crowd followed Him near the Sea of Galilee, Jesus went up to a mountain and sat with His disciples. When He saw the multitude coming toward Him, He asked Philip, “Whence shall we buy bread that these may eat?” (John 6:5, KJV). Philip, overwhelmed by the situation, replied that even a great deal of money would not buy enough bread for everyone.

The verse begins with the statement, “And this he said to prove him” (John 6:6a, KJV). The Greek word translated “prove” means to test or try, and here it indicates that Jesus was testing Philip’s faith. Jesus already knew what He would do, but He wanted to reveal Philip’s heart—whether he would trust Jesus’ power to provide. The test was not for Jesus’ benefit but for Philip’s growth and for the instruction of the other disciples.

The verse continues, “for he himself knew what he would do” (John 6:6b, KJV). This emphasizes Jesus’ divine foreknowledge and sovereign control. He had already determined to miraculously feed the multitude with the small provision available. His question was not born of ignorance but of purposeful teaching, preparing the disciples for the miracle that would make His glory more evident.

Jesus’ method here reflects a pattern in Scripture where God tests His people to reveal and strengthen their faith. Just as God tested Abraham (Genesis 22:1) and allowed Israel to be tested in the wilderness (Deuteronomy 8:2), Jesus tested Philip to draw out his faith and expose his limited perspective. The miraculous feeding that follows demonstrates Jesus’ authority over creation and His ability to provide abundantly beyond human resources.

  • John 6:6 prompts us to reflect on our own trust in God’s provision. When faced with challenges, do we focus on limitations and doubts, or do we trust in God’s sovereignty and power? Jesus already knows what He will do in every situation, and our role is to have faith and trust Him, even when we do not have all the answers. We can draw strength from this verse, knowing that God is aware of our needs and has the power to provide according to His perfect plan.

In summary, John 6:6 reveals Jesus’ purposeful testing of the disciples and His divine foreknowledge of what He would do. It teaches us to trust in God’s provision, even in challenging circumstances, and to have faith in His ability to provide for our needs. It also emphasizes the importance of strengthening our faith and recognizing Jesus as the source of both physical and spiritual sustenance.
