John 6:6

Posted on 18 May at 14:37
Listen to this article

“And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.”

Context:In John 6, Jesus had been attracting large crowds due to His miracles, teachings, and healings. As the crowd followed Him near the Sea of Galilee, Jesus went up to a mountain and sat with His disciples. When He saw a multitude coming toward Him, Jesus asked Philip, “Whence shall we buy bread that these may eat?” (John 6:5, KJV). Philip, being overwhelmed by the situation, responded by saying that it would take a great deal of money to buy enough bread for everyone.

Bible Study:

Testing the Disciples:The verse begins with the statement, “And this he said to prove him” (John 6:6a, KJV). Jesus was testing Philip and the other disciples’ faith and understanding of His power and provision. He wanted to see how they would respond to the challenge of feeding the large crowd. Jesus already knew what He would do, but He wanted to reveal the disciples’ limited perspective and grow their faith in the process.

Jesus’ Foreknowledge:The verse continues, “for he himself knew what he would do” (John 6:6b, KJV). This statement emphasizes the divine foreknowledge of Jesus. He had a plan in mind to provide for the needs of the people, even though the disciples could not comprehend it at that moment. Jesus was aware of His miraculous power and intended to display it to reveal His identity and mission to the disciples and the crowd.

Trusting in God’s Provision:John 6:6 teaches us the importance of trusting in God’s provision, even when faced with challenges or seemingly impossible situations. The disciples initially focused on the lack of resources and the enormity of the need, but Jesus wanted to shift their focus to His power and faithfulness. The verse encourages us to have faith in God’s ability to provide for our needs, even when circumstances seem overwhelming or beyond our control.

Strengthening Faith:Through this testing, Jesus aimed to strengthen the disciples’ faith and deepen their understanding of His divine nature. He wanted them to realize that He is the source of provision, both physically and spiritually. The miraculous feeding that follows in the narrative illustrates Jesus’ power to multiply the available resources to satisfy the multitude’s hunger, demonstrating His authority over creation.

Application:

  • John 6:6 prompts us to reflect on our own trust in God’s provision. When faced with challenges, do we focus on the limitations and doubts or trust in God’s sovereignty and power? It reminds us that Jesus already knows what He will do in every situation, and our role is to have faith and trust Him, even when we don’t have all the answers. We can draw strength from this verse, knowing that God is aware of our needs and has the power to provide for us according to His perfect plan.

In summary, John 6:6 reveals Jesus’ purposeful testing of the disciples and His divine foreknowledge of what He would do. It teaches us to trust in God’s provision, even in challenging circumstances, and to have faith in His ability to provide for our needs. It also emphasizes the importance of strengthening our faith and recognizing Jesus as the source of both physical and spiritual sustenance.
