John 6:50

Posted on 18 May at 14:37

“This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.”

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on

Verse: “This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.” (John 6:50, KJV)

Context:In John 6, Jesus delivers a discourse commonly known as the “Bread of Life” discourse. In this passage, Jesus speaks to a large crowd that had been following Him after He miraculously fed them with five loaves of bread and two fish. He explains the significance of this miracle and uses it to teach them about spiritual nourishment and eternal life.

Spiritual Interpretation:Jesus frequently used metaphors and symbolic language to convey spiritual truths. In this verse, Jesus refers to Himself as the “bread which cometh down from heaven.” This statement points to the spiritual sustenance and eternal life that Jesus offers to humanity. Just as physical bread sustains our physical bodies, Jesus, the bread of life, nourishes our souls and offers us eternal life with God.

Heavenly Origin:Jesus emphasizes that the bread He offers comes down from heaven. This indicates that His origin is divine. He is not an ordinary human being but the Son of God, sent by the Father. This divine origin gives authority and significance to His message and the salvation He offers.

Spiritual Nourishment:Jesus states that those who partake of Him, the bread from heaven, will not die. Here, Jesus is not referring to physical death but spiritual death, which is separation from God. Through faith in Him, we receive spiritual nourishment, forgiveness of sins, and eternal life. By identifying with Jesus and partaking of His sacrifice through faith, we find spiritual sustenance and experience the newness of life in Him.

Foreshadowing the Last Supper:Jesus’ statement about eating the bread from heaven finds its fulfillment in the institution of the Lord’s Supper (also known as the Eucharist or Communion). During the Last Supper, Jesus broke bread, symbolizing His body, and shared the cup, symbolizing His blood. In doing so, He established a new covenant and invited His disciples to remember and participate in His sacrificial death and the eternal life it provides.

Invitation to All:Jesus’ statement about eating the bread from heaven is an invitation to all people. It is not limited to a specific group or ethnicity but is available to anyone who believes in Him. Jesus offers Himself as the source of life, and all who come to Him in faith can receive His grace, forgiveness, and eternal life.

Application: This verse challenges us to consider the significance of Jesus’ sacrifice and to respond in faith. It reminds us that true sustenance and eternal life are found in Him alone. We are invited to accept Jesus’ invitation, partake of Him through faith, and experience the spiritual nourishment and abundant life that He offers.

  • Remember, as you continue to study the Bible, it is beneficial to read the surrounding verses and consider the broader context to deepen your understanding.
