John 6:51

I am the liuing bread, which came downe from heauen. If any man eate of this bread, he shall liue for euer: and the bread that I will giue, is my flesh, which I will giue for the life of the world. John 6:51 (KJV)

John 6:51 is situated within the larger “Bread of Life” discourse in which Jesus uses the familiar image of bread to reveal deep spiritual truths about Himself and His mission. In this passage He declares His identity, the necessity of personal faith, and the purpose of His forthcoming sacrifice, inviting every listener to receive Him as the source of true life.

“I am the living bread which came down from heaven.” In this statement Jesus identifies Himself as the “living bread” that originated in heaven. Just as physical bread sustains the body, He is the spiritual nourishment that sustains the soul. He has descended from the heavenly realm to provide the essential life‑giving sustenance that humanity cannot obtain apart from Him.

“If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever.” Here Jesus emphasizes that partaking of Him is a personal, intimate act of faith. To “eat” signifies receiving Him into one’s life, trusting in Him as Lord and Savior. Those who do so are promised eternal life—not merely a temporal extension of existence, but an everlasting communion with God.

“The bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” This clause points forward to the crucifixion. Jesus speaks of His own flesh as the bread He will give, indicating the sacrificial death that will break His body and shed His blood for humanity’s redemption. The offering is universal: it is given for the life of the whole world, demonstrating the breadth of God’s love.

In summary, John 6:51 presents three core truths: Jesus is the heavenly, living bread; believers must personally partake of Him to obtain eternal life; and His flesh will be given as the ultimate sacrifice for the salvation of all people. The verse therefore underscores the centrality of Christ’s person and work in the Christian faith and calls every reader to place their faith in Him as the source of everlasting life.
