John 7:4

Posted on 18 May at 14:14

“My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.”

Context:John 7:4 is part of a larger passage that describes Jesus’ ministry and the events leading up to the Feast of Tabernacles. Jesus’ brothers encouraged Him to go to Judea and perform miracles openly, so that His disciples and others would see His works.

Importance of Openness:In this verse, Jesus’ brothers express their understanding that no one who seeks to be known openly would do things in secret. They challenge Jesus to show Himself to the world by performing miracles openly. This verse highlights the importance of transparency and public display of one’s actions and intentions.

Jesus’ Purpose:Jesus, however, had a different timetable and a deeper purpose for His ministry. He operated according to God’s will and timing, not simply to seek fame or recognition. Jesus wanted to reveal Himself and His mission in God’s perfect timing, which would ultimately lead to His crucifixion and resurrection for the salvation of humanity.

Obedience to God:Jesus’ response to His brothers in this passage indicates His commitment to obedience to the Father’s will. He explains that His time had not yet come, implying that He would act according to God’s timing and plan. Jesus knew that His ultimate goal was not to seek human recognition or worldly acclaim, but to fulfill the purpose for which He was sent by the Father.

Lessons for Believers:As followers of Christ, we can learn from this verse to prioritise obedience to God’s will above seeking recognition or approval from others. We should not be driven by the desire for personal fame or worldly success but should align ourselves with God’s purposes and timing in our lives.

Balancing Transparency and God’s Timing:Whilst openness and transparency are important, there are times when God may lead us to work behind the scenes or in secret, preparing us for future tasks or moulding our character. We should be attentive to the leading of the Holy Spirit and discern when to openly demonstrate our faith and when to patiently wait for God’s timing.
