Luke 1 begins by introducing the author, Luke, who writes to provide an orderly account of the events concerning Jesus Christ. Luke addresses his work to a man named Theophilus, aiming to provide him with certainty about the things he has been taught.
The narrative opens with the announcement of the miraculous birth of John the Baptist. The angel Gabriel appears to a priest named Zacharias while he is performing his priestly duties in the temple. Gabriel tells Zacharias that his wife, Elizabeth, will conceive and bear a son who will be named John. However, Zacharias doubts the angel’s words and is struck dumb until the child is born.
The focus then shifts to the angel’s visit to a young virgin named Mary in the town of Nazareth. Gabriel informs her that she has been chosen by God to conceive a son, Jesus, who will be the Son of the Most High and the long-awaited Messiah. Despite her initial confusion, Mary humbly accepts God’s plan, acknowledging her obedience.
Mary visits Elizabeth, and upon their meeting, Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit and blesses Mary, recognizing her as the mother of the Lord. In response, Mary praises God in a beautiful hymn called the Magnificat.
