Listen to this article

“For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.”

Context:In Luke 1, we read about the angel Gabriel’s visit to Mary to announce that she would conceive and bear a son who would be the Savior. Mary responds in humble acceptance, acknowledging herself as the Lord’s servant. She then goes to visit her relative Elizabeth, who is also pregnant with John the Baptist. When Mary greets Elizabeth, the Holy Spirit fills Elizabeth, and she blesses Mary. Mary responds to Elizabeth’s blessing with the Magnificat, a hymn of praise and gratitude to God.

This verse is part of the Song of Mary, also known as the Magnificat. Mary, the mother of Jesus, spoke these words in response to the visitation of the angel Gabriel and the news of her miraculous conception of the Son of God.

“For he that is mighty hath done to me great things”: Mary acknowledges the might and power of God. She recognizes that the Almighty has chosen her for an extraordinary purpose. The favor and grace bestowed upon Mary are far beyond anything she could have imagined. This verse reveals Mary’s humble gratitude for the remarkable work of God in her life.

“And holy is his name”: In this phrase, Mary emphasizes the holiness of God’s name. The name of God represents His character, nature, and attributes. Mary recognizes the sacredness and purity of God. This statement reflects her deep reverence and awe for the Lord.

Recognition of God’s power and work:Mary’s words demonstrate her understanding that the extraordinary events unfolding in her life are the result of God’s mighty work. It reminds us that God has the power to do great things in our lives as well. We should acknowledge His sovereignty and trust in His plans.

Reverence for God’s holiness:Mary’s acknowledgment of the holiness of God’s name reflects her deep reverence and respect for Him. It serves as a reminder for us to approach God with awe and honor. Recognizing His holiness should lead us to live lives that are pleasing to Him and in alignment with His commands.

Gratitude and humility:Mary’s response is filled with gratitude and humility. She recognizes that the blessings she has received are not due to her own merit but are a result of God’s grace. It teaches us the importance of cultivating a grateful and humble heart before God, acknowledging His work and provision in our lives.
