Luke 1:50

And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.

Luke 1:50 (KJV)

Luke 1:50 belongs to Mary’s song of praise, the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55). Mary spoke these words after the angel Gabriel told her she would conceive and bear the Son of God, Jesus Christ. Her song expresses joy and gratitude to God for choosing her to be the mother of the Messiah.

Mercy and Fear

Mary proclaims that God’s mercy rests on those who fear Him. In Scripture, the fear of God is not slavish terror or dread of punishment. It is a reverential, filial fear—a deep respect, awe, and humble submission to God’s holiness and authority. It is the fear a dutiful child has for a loving parent, springing from the goodness of God. This fear does not cause God’s mercy; rather, it describes the character of those toward whom God’s mercy is openly shown.

Generational Mercy

The Greek phrase translated “from generation to generation” (εἰς γενεὰς καὶ γενεὰς) emphasizes the enduring, ongoing nature of God’s mercy. Mary declares that God’s mercy is not limited to a specific era or people but extends to all who reverence Him, from parent to child, throughout all generations. The verse teaches that God’s mercy is a present reality (“is on them“) and a continuing promise for every generation of believers.

Mary’s words remind us that God’s mercy is available to everyone who reveres Him. Here are some key takeaways from Luke 1:50:

  • Reverence for God: We should cultivate a deep respect and reverence for God, recognizing His holiness and authority in our lives. This fear of God leads us to worship Him, obey His commandments, and seek His guidance.

  • God’s Unchanging Mercy: God’s mercy is not limited by time or generation. Just as God showed mercy to Mary and the people of her time, He continues to extend His mercy to us today. God’s mercy is a constant and unfailing expression of His love and grace.

  • Passing on the Faith: God’s mercy is not only for individuals but also for families and communities. We should strive to pass on the knowledge and fear of God to future generations, ensuring that the legacy of faith continues from one generation to the next.

  • Trusting in God’s Mercy: When we fear God and trust in His mercy, we can find comfort, hope, and assurance. We can rely on His mercy to forgive our sins, provide for our needs, and guide us on the path of righteousness.

Mary’s song calls us to live with reverent awe before God, confident that His mercy will meet us and the generations that follow.
