Luke 1:77
To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
Luke 1:77 (KJV)
Context
This verse is part of the Benedictus, the song of praise and prophecy spoken by Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, after the birth of his son. Zechariah’s words look forward to the coming Messiah and to the role of John in preparing the way for Him.
Meaning
“To give knowledge of salvation” describes the purpose of John’s ministry. He was called to help the people understand God’s plan of salvation, which was about to be revealed in Jesus Christ. This knowledge was not merely intellectual; it was the understanding that salvation comes through the forgiveness of sins. The Greek word for “remission” means pardon or forgiveness, indicating that God would treat the sinner as though the sin had not been committed.
“Unto his people” points to John’s specific mission to Israel. He was the forerunner promised in the Old Testament, sent to call his fellow countrymen to repentance and to turn their hearts back to God.
“By the remission of their sins” shows the essential link between salvation and the forgiveness of sins. John’s message of repentance prepared people to receive the salvation that Jesus would bring. This salvation is not a political or temporal deliverance, but a spiritual and eternal one centered on Christ.
Application
John’s role reminds us that true knowledge of salvation begins with acknowledging our need for forgiveness. As we repent and turn from sin, we are prepared to receive the salvation that God offers through Jesus Christ.
