Luke 1:79

Listen to this article

“To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Luke 1:79 (KJV) says: “To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

This verse is a part of the passage known as the “Benedictus,” which is the song of Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist. Zechariah prophesies about the coming of Jesus and the role he would play in the salvation of humanity.

Context:Luke 1:79 is found within the larger context of the events leading up to the birth of Jesus. In this chapter, the angel Gabriel appears to Zechariah and announces that his wife Elizabeth will conceive and give birth to a son, who would be named John. Zechariah initially doubts the angel’s words and is struck mute until the birth of John. When John is born, Zechariah’s mouth is opened, and he praises God through the Benedictus.

Light to those in darkness:The phrase “To give light to them that sit in darkness” refers to the spiritual darkness and ignorance that existed among the people before the coming of Jesus. It signifies the arrival of Jesus as the light of the world (John 8:12) who brings spiritual illumination, truth, and understanding to those who are lost and in darkness.

Shadow of death:“The shadow of death” represents the hopelessness and despair that sin and separation from God bring. It is a metaphorical description of the human condition before the arrival of Jesus, who would bring salvation and eternal life. Jesus’ coming would dispel the darkness of sin and offer the hope of deliverance from spiritual death.

Guiding into the way of peace:The purpose of Jesus’ coming is to guide humanity into the way of peace. Jesus is the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6) who reconciles humanity with God and establishes peace between God and man. Through his life, teachings, death, and resurrection, Jesus provides the pathway to true peace, both in our relationship with God and in our relationships with others.

Overall, Luke 1:79 highlights the significance of Jesus’ arrival as the light that dispels spiritual darkness, the guide that leads us out of the shadow of death, and the source of true peace. It emphasizes the transformative power of Jesus’ ministry and his role as the Savior of the world.
