Luke 1:24

“And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived and hid herself five months, saying,”

Luke 1:24 is part of the narrative describing the events leading up to the birth of John the Baptist. To understand the significance of this verse, let’s explore the broader context.

Luke 1:5-7 introduces us to the priest named Zechariah and his wife, Elizabeth. They were both righteous before God, following all the commandments and ordinances. However, Elizabeth was barren and they were both advanced in age, which made it seemingly impossible for them to have children.

One day, while Zechariah was serving in the temple, an angel of the Lord appeared to him and announced that his prayer had been heard, and Elizabeth would conceive and bear a son. This son, named John, would play a crucial role in preparing the way for the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

Coming to Luke 1:24, it states that after those days, which refers to the time following the angelic visitation to Zechariah, Elizabeth conceived. It is worth noting that she hid herself for five months after conceiving. The reason for her seclusion may have been twofold: to protect the miraculous nature of her pregnancy and to spend time in prayer and contemplation.

This verse highlights the fulfilment of God’s promise to Zechariah and Elizabeth. Despite their old age and the seemingly insurmountable obstacle of Elizabeth’s barrenness, God intervened and enabled them to conceive a child. This serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness in keeping His promises, even when circumstances appear impossible.

Moreover, Elizabeth’s conceiving a child is significant in terms of biblical typology. It mirrors the story of Sarah, the wife of Abraham, who also conceived in her old age after being barren. Both instances demonstrate that nothing is impossible for God and that He can bring about miraculous births to fulfil His divine purposes.

The birth of John the Baptist, as we later learn, plays a vital role in God’s redemptive plan. He is the one prophesied in Malachi 3:1 and Isaiah 40:3, who would prepare the way for the coming of the Messiah. Through John’s ministry, the hearts of the people would be prepared to receive Jesus, the Saviour of the world.

In conclusion, Luke 1:24 reveals the fulfilment of God’s promise to Zechariah and Elizabeth, highlighting God’s faithfulness and His ability to bring about the seemingly impossible. It serves as a reminder that God’s timing and His purposes are perfect, even when circumstances appear bleak. It also sets the stage for the significant role that John the Baptist would play in preparing the way for Jesus Christ.
